Prepare for a power outage this winter

Prepare for a winter power outage before the lights go out. Even if you have not experienced power outages in the past, having the necessary items available is key for when it does, especially in colder weather. Start by getting a large box to store all your items in.

Make sure you have lighting such as flashlights and candles. Make sure to have plenty of back up batteries for the flashlights and matches or lighters for the candles.

Make sure to have a first aid kit in your power outage box. The first aid kit can be bought at a local store, or you can put one together yourself. Make sure to include any personal medications, or ones your health-care provider may suggest. Include the basics such as: band aids, ointment packets, pain relievers, latex gloves, and gauze pads.

A key item to include would be bottles or gallon jugs of water. This is essential to make sure you do not become dehydrated.

During these colder months having plenty of blankets and warm clothes are essential. You can always to choose to buy a propane or kerosene heater as well.

A radio will be necessary to keep up to date on weather standings.

Food is another key item. Stock your pantry with items such as nuts, canned soups and foods, peanut butter, and crackers. Also, be sure to have some utensils available for us, you can store these in your box or use disposable plastic wear.

For young children make sure to pack items such as a coloring book and crayons or books to keep them occupied. If you have pets make sure to keep food, toys, and water for them as well.
